Jozef Mesar - Sculpture

I am a woodcarver with many years of carving experience. I was born in the historical Slovakian town of Kezmarok, but spent most of my young life in the countryside surrounded by hills and forests. I learned my craft in Bratislava (the capital of Slovakia ), graduating as a teacher of woodcarving from the University of Matej Bell. I started my working career in the 1980̢۪s working for the Slovakian Residential Restoration Programme. In the late 1990̢۪s I set up my own business, working on private commissions including ornate reliefs, miniature nativity scenes, crests, shields, coats of arms for major hotels and restaurants, and life size statues etc. I later spent over 7 years teaching woodcarving. In 2002 due to a shortage of skilled woodcarvers in the UK, I was invited to work for Stuart Interiors- a classical and 16th century reproduction furniture maker in Somerset which at the time had a showroom at Barrington House. Whilst working for Stuart Interiors I also trained two other employees, thereby passing on my experience, knowledge and love of wood .

Last year I opened a Woodcarving Workshop and Gallery located at the picturesque National Trust property of Barrington Court, Nr. Ilminster. Visitors and clients can watch me carving in my workshop and browse a selection of original decorative carved items, unique gifts and presents including carved oak mirror frames, love hearts, tea lights made of sustainably sourced wood from Barrington Estate .
