Tracey Hatton - Drawing & Painting
I was born in London and resided in New Zealand before settling in West Somerset. Educated at the University of West England, I have exhibited throughout the West of England and have work in collections in the UK, Austria, Australia and New Zealand.
The words: memory, identity, belonging, displacement, fragments, stories, folkloristics, walkingâ€Â¦ surround and uphold my art practice. I am attracted to stories of ‘strong’ women – forces to be reckoned with – especially those of the past that share a common ‘landscape’.
In 2008 I dared to listen to my grandmother̢۪s memory tapes and discovered the land/mountains/paths/woods where she grew up in South Wales. I visited these sites and walked in the footsteps of my foremothers; the resulting connection I felt with this maternal line and their shared landscape developed into a series of drawings.
My way of working is gestural and this imbibes the work with emotion and movement. Repeated layers of graphite are drawn into with the eraser to produce a depth of mystery that invites the viewer to look more closely. The word palimpsest often comes to mind where preceding layers are there but not quite visible, a mnemonic reminder of previous generations and the multi-layered nature of a life.
